Interactive Installation
2024 - ongoing
Generative Persuasion is an interactive installation, workshop series, and research project that demonstrates how Large Language Models (LLMs) can be weaponized to generate effective personality-based micro-targeted disinformation. Participants use psychometric profiles to generate social media posts, political ads, and conspiracy theories tailored to specific personalities and ideologies. The output, displayed in real time as mock social media content, mirrors tools already in use in real-world disinformation campaigns.
The installation simulates a military tradeshow display, evoking the glossy presentations of defense technology companies. Visitors step into a simulated command center, where they interact with a locally hosted LLM, which is a crucial ethical safeguard. Unlike online models, our system is entirely offline: no data or content leaves the device, and no output can be weaponized beyond the installation.
Generative Persuasion is a collaboration with Derek Curry. The project was created for the 2024 Getty PST ART: Art & Science Collide program in Los Angeles, with the support of curators Liz Gordon and Krista Blake. Further support for development has been provided by MSU Museum curators Mark Sullivan and Caroline White for the Blurred Realities exhibition, and Beall Center for Art + Technology curator David Familian for the Disruptive Cultures: Affect and Effects in Social Media exhibition.
